Chinese Herbal Medicine in a Chronic Dermatitis Case

Overview

Chronic skin conditions can be difficult to manage and may significantly affect daily life. M., a 48-year-old woman, reported experiencing a recurring skin rash for more than 27 years. The condition began after a viral illness in early adulthood and presented as pale red maculopapular eruptions accompanied by burning, dryness, and intense itching. Areas affected included the legs, thighs, abdomen, arms, and elbows.

She described predictable patterns: symptoms intensified before menstruation and eased afterward. Stress episodes often triggered flare-ups. The discomfort disrupted sleep – sometimes limiting rest to 2–5 hours per night and was accompanied by digestive disturbances such as bloating, constipation, and morning nausea.

Topical steroids had previously offered short-term relief, but symptoms tended to return after discontinuation.
