Long-Standing Lichen Planus Symptoms and Herbal Medicine Care

Overview

A 72-year-old retired nurse sought care for chronic skin symptoms that had persisted for approximately seven years. She described purple, scaly patches and intense itching affecting her hands, elbows, legs, and thighs. The symptoms began months after a severe flu and gradually worsened, disrupting sleep and daily comfort.

She had been diagnosed with Lichen Planus and received conventional care, but her symptoms remained difficult to manage. The persistent itching, sleep disturbance, and recurring flare-ups significantly affected her quality of life.

Key challenges

These factors contributed to a pattern that, from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, reflected internal imbalances that can influence skin presentation.

Treatment

A TCM-based care plan was created with the aim of improving comfort, reducing itching, supporting digestive balance, and helping the individual manage flare-up triggers more effectively. The primary method was a customized herbal formula composed of 16 herbs, each selected for its traditional role in harmonizing internal heat and dryness patterns and promoting overall skin comfort according to TCM principles. (No biomedical therapeutic claims are made.)

In addition to herbal care, general dietary guidance was offered, encouraging the reduction of foods the individual had noticed tended to aggravate her symptoms, such as sweets, processed foods, and heavy dairy. Because she reported that emotional stress often intensified flare-ups, simple relaxation and breathing practices were recommended to support regulation. Light movement, such as short walks and gentle exercises, was also suggested to promote overall well-being.

Outcomes

According to her own observations:

Her experience reflects one individual’s response and may not be generalized.

Conclusion

This case describes how one individual used Chinese herbal medicine, diet modification, and lifestyle practices as part of her approach to managing chronic Lichen Planus symptoms. The reported improvements illustrate how TCM-based care can complement conventional management by focusing on internal body balance. Individual results vary.
