Spinal Disc Disorders Case Studies

Case Study 1.  53 y.o male with intermittent pain, burning sensation, numbness and tingling to his right arm for 6 months. Regular treatment and medications did not help.

-According to his X-Ray report, patient suffers from C5-C6 degenerative disc disorder and bone spur.

– Pain intensity is  level 7 on a scale from 0-10 and aggravates in sitting position and at night and prevents him from sleep.

–After 10 acupuncture treatments, pain is gone. Only minor thumb numbness still persists.

Case Study 2. 48. y.o female with pain to her legs and back after 10 minutes of walking.

-MRI shows L4-L4-5 mild narrowing of the spinal canal and right for aminal stenosis.

– Pt has pain and numbness of her feet after 10 -30 minutes of walking.

-After 3 months of acupuncture treatments, herbal prescriptions and Qi Gong exercises, patient reports is able to walk without pain.

Case Study 3. 71 y.o. male with pain to his back, sciatica, swelling and pain to his left leg and foot.

  • Pain is severe (level 10 out of 10) when walking. Pain at night is 3.
  • Patient takes opioids and other medications to calm his neuropathic pain.
  • MRI reports show disc protrusion at the level of L5-S1.
  • After 7 months of acupuncture treatments and Chinese herbal prescriptions, patient reports that there is no pain to his back, left leg and foot. However, patient states that there is a moderate numbness to his left foot.

Case Study 4. 71. y.o male with severe sciatica and pain to his rt leg and ankle for one month.

– Pain level is 8-9 out of 10 and is getting worse when walking and at night.

– MRI report shows large L5-S1 disc extrusion that irritates L5 nerve root.

– After 3 months acupuncture treatments and Chinese herbal prescriptions, patient reports no pain to his leg or ankle. After one year of follow up, patient is still pain free.

Case Study 5. 57 y.o male with sciatica and +RT foot pain for 20 years.

  • Patient suffers from severe pain to his right foot. 20 years ago patient had a history of herniated disc at the level of L5-S1 and had a surgery for artificial disc. However, the surgery had not improved his symptoms and his pain still persists despite medications like Tramadol and Lyrica.
  • The pain is worse once standing, sitting or walking. Pain level is 8-9 out of 10.
  • After 4 months of acupuncture and laser treatments and Chinese herbal prescriptions, his pain level reduced to 1-2 out of 10. Patient reports that he is able to walk up to 3 kilometers with minimal pain.

Case Study 6. 38 y.o. male with severe, acute right leg sciatica and back pain.

  • Pt came with severe right leg and back pain.
  • MRI report shows severe L5-S1 intravertebral disc extrusion that creates pressure on the S1 nerve root.
  • Pain is so severe that patient is unable to walk. Pain level is 10/10.
  • After 3 months acupuncture treatments combined with Chinese herbal prescription, patient reported that his back pain and right leg pain had reduced. Only the right foot numbness is left.

Case study 7. 81 y.o male with severe sciatic nerve pain for one month.

  • Patient came with complaint of severe pain to his right thigh, knee and shin. Pain is worse at night and after walking 30 to 40 meters. Pain level is high 8-9 on a scale from 0 to 10. There is also weakness to his right knee.
  • Takes Codeine to calm his pain.
  • X-Ray of the spine. “Facet arthropathy is seen at L4-5, and L5-S1 associated with grade 1 anterolisthesis, known to predispose to spinal stenosis.”
  • After 10 acupuncture treatments combined with Chinese herbal prescription, patient states that he is pain free. Able to walk 1.5 km and sleep through the night without pain and also states that does not use Codeine now.
